Stress is one of the biggest factors of life in today's busy world, and is likely to affect most people at some point in their lives, especially when trying to combine work with bringing up a family, or caring for elderly relatives, or dealing with the pressures of work and the high expectations it demands.

Stress can affect all aspects of your life, physically, emotionally, and the way in which you behave.  Everybody deals with stress differently and symptoms of stress vary so it is important to seek the advice of your GP.


Some of the signs of stress can include:

  • Becoming agitated easily, moody and frustrated
  • Feeling overwhelmed
  • Always having a busy mind and find it difficult to relax
  • Feeling bad about yourself, lonely or worthless
  • A feeling that you want to avoid others.
  • Low energy
  • Headaches
  • Diarrhoea, constipation and nausea
  • Aches, pains and tense muscles
  • Chest pain and rapid heartbeat
  • Insomnia
  • Worrying constantly
  • Being forgetful and finding it difficult to organise yourself
  • Finding it difficult to focus
  • Appetite changes - not wanting to eat or wanting to constantly eat
  • Increased use of alcohol, cigarettes or drugs.
